If his name sounds familiar then it’s because he was the Chef Director at Polpo, who along with Russell Norman set up the original Polpo in Soho. Tom Oldroyd has been chef director at the Venetian small plate chain – which will shortly open its sixth branch in Chelsea.
He has now left the company to focus on the launch of his own venture, which will be called Oldroyd Ltd and will launch at 344 Upper Street in June. As fans of the Polpo group we’re pretty excited to hear he’s going solo.
The 40 cover restaurant will feature a no-reservation café downstairs and upstairs you’ll find bistro style dining which will take bookings.
The menu will change daily focusing on locally sourced British produce with inspiration taken from Tom’s travels throughout Europe and the US. So expect to find smaller plates such as confit mustard duck wings, pea and pork jowl croquette with summer truffle mayonnaise, larger plates including Cornish chorizo, prawn & broad bean paella, with cockles and aioli. Those after something a bit lighter for summer can tuck into Grilled peach, Dorset coppa and perroche or if you want to stick to something meatier then get your hands on porchetta rolls with stuffing, crackling and pickled fennel.
Come the weekend there’ll be brunch dishes alongside the main menu. So if you’re a little hungover or simply want to while away the hours, you can get stuck into bacon and egg pappardelle and waffle iron rosti with smoked salmon served with soured cream – all washed down with Bloody Marys of course…unless you’re really suffering and then you can have a cold-pressed juice.
